Hamilton College is pleased to announce it has received funding to support a
10-day StarTalk teacher training institute for pre-service and in-service K-12
Chinese teachers. The institute will be held from July 5-16, 2010 at Hamilton
College in Clinton, NY (two hours west of Albany). This is a government-funded
program which means there is no cost to the participants.

PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The institute has two components: Pedagogy and Language Training

The pedagogy focus is on comprehensible-input based teaching methods,
and the language training is designed to support speakers at the Intermediate
Low-High level to move up the proficiency ladder.

PROGRAM FOCUS
1. To provide daily language instruction to enable participants to increase
their language proficiency
2. To support participants in the development of their K-12 Chinese teaching
skills

Participants will learn how to design and implement a standards-based curriculum
that incorporates backward curriculum design and integrated performance
assessments. Special attention will be given to helping participants learn the
skills and techniques for conducting class in the target language. Instructional
strategies will include activities developed based on recent brain research.

PROGRAM DETAILS
The 10-day institute will include:
A. Language training that is aligned with the content necessary for teaching in
the target language
B. Multiple teaching opportunities to practice discrete components of a lesson
C. Opportunities for participants to address the following questions:

Program Goals: What are the goals of my program?
Curriculum: How do I decide what to teach?
Customizing Materials: How do I create songs, raps and dialogues?
Lesson Design: What do I do during a 50-minute class?
Comprehensible Input: How do I stay in the target language?
Assessment: How do I know students learned what I wanted to them learn?
Technology: Which technology should I use?
