I am looking for teachers! Does anyone have any great tips on where to start looking, or anecdotes on where you found your teacher? I am getting desperate, and I know I'm not the only one.

Hi Ava,
I work for the Visiting International Faculty Program (VIF) and we have been bringing teachers to the U.S. for about 20 years to promote international exchange. Currently, we have about 1500 non-U.S. citizens teaching in our program. Check out our web site at www.vifprogram.com.

you can also use teacher replacement companies such as Carney Sandoe. They will charge you some fee once they find you the right candidate, but they are very helpful.

check out http://www.carneysandoe.com/

Good luck!

You can also check out the local Chinese churches. I was able to get some teachers that way for the summer programs. Good luck to you.

The other way is to contact Han Ban back in China to see if you can get some Volunteer Chinese teachers from them.

Another idea is to check to see if anyone knows of a teacher at a school who is a native Mandarin speaker, but teaches another subject. It would be relatively straightforward for an existing teacher to either get an emergency credential from their school district, or to get credentialed through a teacher's program but passing state sanctioned tests. In CA they would need to pass the CSET.

Good luck!

I'm not sure that Yalan's idea is going to work because many school districts strongly discourage a teacher from teaching outside her department, even for one class period. For example, a math teacher can only teach math, a history teacher can only teach history. Also many districts discourage "plundering" - taking a teacher out of a department to teach in a different department, especially if the teacher is in special ed and is holds a Mandarin teacher certificate (this is my situation right now...)

Ideas:
1. Contact your local Confucius Institute and local Chinese heritage schools.
2. Contact universities, colleges, community colleges and ask to be referred to grad students who may be interested.
3. Post your opening in as many websites as you can - you should post in CLTA, ACTFL, your school's website, etc.
