I would recommend "Ni Hao" as a great textbook for Middle school students.
The first book in the series includes greetings, numbers, pets, and sports and more. Each topic introduces students to a real life context in which they can rehearse language...for example, meeting friends, talking about their favorite sports, describing pets etc.,
You can buy a copy at Amazon and the ISBN-10 is 0887273637.
I have used it with 6th - 8th graders and it seems well paced and suitable for Middle school students. I adapted it a lot, and developed learning contracts from the textbook, as I don't particularly like only using textbooks to teach, but it is one of the best I have found.
If any other teachers have recommendations, I would be interested in hearing about them.
You can call this bookstore for information on textbooks or better go in to check out the textbooks. I talked to their staff before, and they gave me a quite comprehensive explanation on what textbook suits what level and what program.
Ni Hao is available in simplified and traditional characters.
There are also Student Workbooks that can be used with the Teacher Guide.
I think there are currently 5 levels and when I used it, I used Ni Hao 1 for 8th grade, Ni Hao 2 for 9th grade etc.,
It can be adapted for any beginner levels in Middle School or High School. It works best for students who have no previous knowledge of Chinese.
Good Luck!
I also like the KuaiLe HanYu series -- and I've compared it to Nihao. KuaiLe HanYu has a CDrom that you must get if you use the series: there are cartoon videos to introduce conversations, live videos of students in China in life-like situations, games, writing demonstration, pronunciation practice, etc. It's a very big plus about the curriculum, which has some problems... but after 3 years of looking, I still like it the best!
I add a lot of my own exercises & activities to KuaiLe HanYu to allow more use of the vocabulary. I also drop use of pinyin on my own worksheets for students.
I am a foriegner living in China. I have found that most topic based books require a lot of time and it seems that the grammar is confusing. I have simplified the whole progress that starts with an explanation of Chinese and takes students from zero to intermediate. Our program has two text books that are taught side by side, the Grammar Text (322 pages) and the Workbook (283 pages). Each Workbook lesson has an accompanying MP3 sound file that has recordings of all the dialogs and new words. The Grammar Text has complete grammar explanations combined with ample usage examples and the Workbook has dialogs, exercises and speaking activities.
The voice files are recorded at two speeds "training" and "native". You can download the materials for free. Also look on the "wiki-projects" page for more lesson. (they also have voice files embedded in them - at both speeds)
