I am an English speaker who studied Chinese in Taiwan and China. I must admit when I first attended my intensive Chinese course at Nanjing for the first time, I was rather taken aback by the very traditional methods of teaching.
All the methods of drill, reading aloud, and "rinse and repeat" methods were used, and it made me think about how different the methods of teaching in China and the west are.
How do teachers teaching Chinese to students in the US or elsewhere, reconcile the traditional methods of one educational system to the now quite different methods of engaging learners, ongoing assessment, learning outcomes, and student focused learning?
Do you use a bit of both or do you see the benefits of a more traditional approach when teaching Chinese?

I have experienced the methods used in China to teach Chinese and find them difficult. I think using a topic based program makes it too hard to learn grammar. It takes a long time to peice together the ways things should be said. For instance, it is hard to understand how to use 了 using this approach. I have combined a good grammar explanation with topics in my program. Using a grammar based approach give learners a structure for saying anything they choose. That way the classroom is a place to practice saying things that are meaningful to learners and encourages them to create thier own vocabulary lists. I use a lot of games, flashcards, playing cards, physical, etc. Basically, I try to keep the kids actively engaged on a variety of levels and once they've learned how to play several games, we'll have a free choice time at some point where they can choose what/ how they want to practice. I like dividing the class into small groups and rotating them through "stations" where they practice different skills and/or play different games at each station....
You made some decent points there. I looked on the internet for the problem and found most people will go along with along with your website.
